History of Family and Genealogy Certificate Class Notes

CERTIFICATE IN HISTORY OF FAMILY AND GENEALOGICAL METHODS  (UL)/ CERTIFICATE IN GENEALOGY(UCC)

The certificate programmes facilitated by The Irish Ancestry Research Centre (IARC), at UL and UCC, are designed to provide a supportive and stimulating context for history of family research. Each constitutes a one-year, part-time evening course, which caters for the continuing education needs of those who wish to undertake study in the theory, methodology and practice of history of family and genealogical methods and field methods, and who require supervision in carrying out research particularly as it might be applied to an understanding of familial heritage in the context of local, regional and national identity.

PROGRAMME OF STUDY
The course, which is delivered one evening per fortnight on campus as well as a monthly double (field) class, during the Autumn and Spring semesters, facilitates students who live at a distance. A sympathetic academic environment will be further provided by the team of visiting course lecturers, and the course support team, who will combine to offer guidance in appropriate research and learning skills.

NUI DIPLOMA IN GENEALOGY (UCC): Further study options open to high honours students of the Certificate in History of Family/Certificate in Genealogy include direct entry to Year II of the NUI Diploma in Genealogy at UCC and, for those with existing bachelors level qualifications, or upon obtaining this NUI Diploma,  a one year, full-time or two-year part-time postgraduate degree programme, is also a possibility, but is more appropriate for direct post-certificate entry if you are an existing bachelors graduate (in any discipline).
